Do you have a Will?
It is alarming how many of us do not have a Will, possibly because we consider it is tempting fate to make one. The truth is you could be risking financial disaster, and great upset and expense for your loved ones after you have gone if you do not make a Will.
Not only that but you could end up paying Inheritance Tax to the state which could have been perhaps avoided or reduced if you have consulted a solicitor and made a will and undertaken some tax planning.
How often do I need to make or update my will?
We recommend that you do this at least every three years or should a significant event occur like the birth or death of a loved one.Wills last until you die, or they are revoked ( cancelled).
Marriage or Civil Partnership does have Inheritance Tax benefits at the moment and although this alone is not a good reason for marriage it shoudl be seriously considered as part of a tax planning strategy and in conjunction with a Pre - Marital Agreement.
Important Note
If you marry and you have a will that is not made in expectation of marriage and which does not states that it should apply despite the marriage, your will is cancelled immediately by the marriage. As part of your wedding plans you should both see us and make a new will before you get married
Not only that but you could end up paying Inheritance Tax to the state which could have been perhaps avoided or reduced if you have consulted a solicitor and made a will and undertaken some tax planning.
If you do not make a Will, the state decides, using a set of rules called the Intestacy Rules who benefits. This could mean that:-
-
those that you always intended to leave financially secure at your death receive nothing from your estate, and have to see if they can apply to court for some provision. In some cases they will not even be eligible to apply to the court.
-
if you have no will relatives you barely know or cannot stand could inherit your property, whilst friends and charities lose out.
Safeguard the future of your loved ones and make a will
Our Specialist Wills Department can help you make your Will, and to see if we can reduce any tax that your loved ones may need to pay out of your estate after your death by prudent tax planning before your death.
Death comes to us all, but despite this, it is no less distressing for those that we leave behind. We can help you at this difficult and emotional time to sort out the finances, by checking and interpreting the Will, or explaining the Intestacy rules if there is no Will, completing inheritance tax forms for you, and advising you on tax generally, and whether, in your case, it is possible to minimize it.
